Found in the Red Sea and Indian Ocean to the Andaman Sea. Replaced elsewhere by the very similar P. volitans. Usually 11 dorsal rays (those on the top of the fish). The bite of this fish can be very painful and possibly fatal. They often hide under ledges during the day, and are more active at dusk and at night when they feed on fish and crustaceans. Lionfish use their non-stinging pectoral fins to drive fish into their mouths. The venomous spines give the fish a conspicuous coloration, warning predators to keep their distance.
