Bust in honor of Alberto Santos Dumont Born in Palmira, Brazil on July 20, 1873, he was one of the most important pioneers in world aviation, having designed, built and piloted the first dirigible balloons with a gasoline engine. In 1901, he won the Deutsch Prize for the flight he took around the Eiffel Tower in his Airship No. 6. In October 1906 Santos Dumont presented to the public at the Bagatelle Airfield, near Paris, his 14 Bis plane, the first aircraft heavier than the air taking off autonomously, immediately setting a record of distance, 60 metres, which earned him the Air Club of France Award. In 1909 he presents the Demoiselle which became very popular being the first airplane to be built in series. Santos Dumont returns to Brazil in 1928 as a national hero and dies in Guarujá on July 23, 1932. The Air Museum has two 1:1 scale replicas of the 14-Bis and the Demoiselle on display.
