The Church of Our Lady in Ephesus is the cathedral of the Ephesian bishops, erected in the fifth century on the site of an ancient Roman basilica in connection with the Third Ecumenical Council in the city, at which the title of the Mother of Jesus was assigned to the Virgin Mary. Thus, it is the first church in the world to honor Our Lady. The ruins of the temple, which was considerably enlarged at the turn of the sixth century, remain near the harbor of ancient Ephesus.
