The practice of human sacrifice was common among Mesoamerican and South American cultures during the Inca empire. Like all other known pre-Columbian civilizations, the Aztecs practiced human sacrifice. In normal procedure, the sacrifice was performed on the top of the temple. The victim was held down by four priests on a stone slab, and her abdomen was cut by a fifth priest with a ceremonial knife made of flint. The cut was made in the abdomen and went past the diaphragm. The priest allegedly extracted the heart, still beating. The heart was then placed in a bowl supported by a statue of the god to whom the victim was offered, and the body thrown down the temple steps.
