Barletta overlooks the Adriatic coast, where the rocky coast softens into the sands of Ofanto. The river marks the border between the provinces of Bari and Foggia and has always had a decisive influence on the agricultural activity of the area. Its course also marks the transition from the Karst Murgia to the vast and fertile plain of the Tavoliere delle Puglie which can be said to begin right from Barletta. The city of Barletta is located on the shore of the Adriatic Sea, at the south-west mouth of the Gulf of Manfredonia, facing the Gargano promontory.
