Pictured is a Japanese sculpture of Emma-O on display in the Dallas Museum of Art in Dallas, Texas. The medium is wood, lacquer, gold gilt and glass. It was created between 1568-1615 in the Momoyama period. The Indian deity and king of the underworld Yama is known in Japan as Emma. Emma is recognized both individually and as one of the Ten Kings of Hell, who impart judgements and penalties. Statues of Emma often appear in temples, where worshippers appeal to him for clemency.
