Horse chestnut, or acorn, or esculus (Latin Aésculus) is a genus of plants in the Sapindaceae family, many species of which are widely bred in parks.The old name of the genus Hippocastanum Mill., as well as the name of the family Hippocastanaceae A.Rich., nom. cons., to which it was previously attributed, actually means "horse chestnut" and "horse chestnut" respectively. It was named equine in order to distinguish its inedible fruits from the fruits of the real (edible) chestnut Castanea Tourn, which look very similar to them. Another version says that the ripe fruits of this chestnut allegedly resemble the skin of a bay horse in color and luster.The modern name of the genus — Aesculus — in Ancient Rome was used to refer to one of the species of oak, namely Quercus esculus L. Quercus robur Willd.The Russian name "chestnut" refers to a number of other plants that are very far from horse chestnut from a biological point of view.
