In 1807, on the day of the Tomioka Hachiman Shrine festival, the Eitaibashi Bridge collapsed, killing over 2,000 people. Subsequently, great fires, earthquakes, and epidemics struck the Edo area, resulting in numerous deaths and injuries. In the Meiji era (1868-1912), a strange phenomenon occurred in this area, and a stone statue and many human bones, teeth, and dentures were found at the bottom of the river. The human bones were buried at the Kaikyoin Temple in Ryogoku, and the stone statue and tooth bones were buried here for memorial services. People with tooth ailments are told to take salt from the shrine and rinse their mouths to cure the pain, and in return they are offered salt and toothpicks.
