Kane-nori Hirama had been driven from his birthplace Owari for a crime he did not commit, and lived in poverty as a fisherman and hunter in Kawasaki. One night, a high priest in his dream told him to cast a net into the sea and retrieved a wooden statue of Kobo Daishi. Kanenori washed and purified the statue, offered flowers as a memorial service, and eventually established a small temple nearby. Sonken Shonin, who visited Koyasan during his travels around the country, heard the story of the wooden statue of Kobo Daishi and joined forces with Kanenori to build Heikenji Temple in 1128 (Daju 3). In 1134, with the blessings of Odaishi, Kane-nori was cleared of all charges and was able to return to his native land.
