he Bug crosses the lands of Podlasie, creating a winding valley with a relatively narrow bottom and sloping slopes. The valley with a general SE-NW course constitutes a separate mesoregion - the Podlasie Bug Gorge. Its width is variable near Mielnik it narrows to 1.3 km, and in the north-western part it is 4.5 - 5 km. Steep slopes with heights of up to about 55 m limit the Bug valley near Mielnik. Here, the river cuts across the plateau, including a hump formed by chalk rocks. This section of the Bug valley, which has the character of a gorge, creates an area with exceptionally diversified relief.
