This beautiful Italianate home, built between 1876 to 1878, was built by the Third Baptist Church. Madame C.J. Walker, for whom the home is named in honor, is the first female American self made millionaire of any race. As a woman of color herself, she was able to make and sell hair and skin care product specifically for people of color. At the time this home was built, San Francisco still had only a very small Black population, so there were no services here for them at the time. When young girls or woman of color would come here, there was no where for them to turn for help and support, like a YWCA, which the Chinese and Japanese had here at the time. This home was built specifically to fill that void. Although today it is a private residence, it is a city designated landmark. Home. Support. Community.
