The oldest known use by humans for some form of a toothpick goes back to 1.8 Million years ago in Dmanisi, Georgia, in Europe. Although we do not know exactly what was used, we know something was used because of the grooves and pits left in the teeth that caused them. These lesions can still be caused today by toothpicks, which is why dentist recommend flossing and a water pick type device instead. Toothpick are still good for checking backing items in ovens or serving small food items at parties.
