It is hard now to picture a time when there were no cars anywhere, for anyone. When Anson Hotaling built his hotel here, in 1866, it was still years before the invention of the first car, and many decades before cars became common. People commonly got around town by foot, carriages or horseback. Much like people today when they go into a store, they will have their dogs leashes tied to some kind of post or tree so the dog does not just wonder off, in Ansons day, people would tie, or hitch, their horse to a post, so the horse does not just wonder off.
