South Barnes Butte in Papago Park with sunlit Camelback Mountain, Phoenix, Arizona. The cloud cover breaks as sunlight strikes the granite peak. In the buttes, holes and voids known as tafone formed in the arkosic conglomeratic sandstone of the Papago Buttes. The formations consist of mid-Cenozoic debris-flow breccia overlying pre-Cambrian granite. This area is a popular urban hiking area due to its scenic views and colorful variations. There are family-friendly trails throughout the desert landscape. Desert fauna, Palo Verde, and native saguaro cactus are prominent in the desert terrain. The area is situated at the confluence of Phoenix, Tempe, and Scottsdale borders.
