The Great Blue Heron is a large, majestic bird found throughout North America, and it stands as one of the tallest herons with a height of up to 4.5 feet (1.4 meters) and a wingspan reaching about 6.6 feet (2 meters). It has elegant, blue-gray plumage with long, slender legs ideal for wading in shallow waters. Its back and wings are dark grayish-blue, and it has a distinctive long neck often curved into an "S" shape. The heron's head is white with a striking black stripe extending from the eye to the back of its head, where it tapers into graceful plumes. Its sharp, yellow bill is perfectly suited for spearing fish, its primary prey.
