The original building, made of brick, lime and adobe, was so modest that it had to be covered with stone and brick and later enlarged. The most outstanding feature of this building is its beautiful façade, a work created by Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón between 1541 and 1553. It is a masterpiece of the Renaissance. It is made of stone and has three horizontal bodies. The first thing that draws attention is the doorway, which is in the centre and opens to the outside, guarded by two columns and a semicircular arch. In the first body, with balconies, there are the shields of Cardinal Cisneros on each side, crowned with a pediment. And in the upper part, in the third body, there is the imperial shield of the two-headed eagle and the figures of Minerva on the sides.The façade of the College of San Ildefonso is the main building of the University and the current Headquarters of the Rectorate. It is structured as if it were a stone altarpiece with three floors and is made of hierarchical stone. It is considered a monument and a Site of Cultural Interest, according to an official publication of 1914.
