View from an observation tower at the wetlands of National Reserve Lauwersmeer and the small village Oostmahorn, clamped between the Lauwersmeer, Ezumakeeg and three leisure parks. In earlier times the sea had free rein here and Lauwersmeer was open to the Wadden Sea, but in 1969 fear of flooding led to the construction of a dam. A shock for many nature lovers, but fortunately it soon became evident that a beautiful new landscape had been created. Nature in the area around Lauwersmeer is so special that the area has now been designated as a National Park.
