Varslingsvarder, warning beacons, on mountains that were set on fire in case of for instance war (yes, just like in The Lord of the Rings!) have been in use for over 3.000 years. They were in use throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. Similar signals are known from Japan, Australia, North and South America and Africa. This is the view from the location of the Ryeberget beacon in Valdres, Norway, dotted with autumn colors, overlooking the Strondafjord, with the snow-capped Jotunheimen mountains in the back.
