A wise looking gnome is studying a captains log of some kind in an attempt to complete his map. However this is not a usual cartographer, as one can tell by the crystal ball decorating his table. He is something of an oracle to his people. As for the vials and bottles on the back shelves they reveal that he also delves into alchemy. Now the ship in the background betrays that the man is probably lost at sea himself, something that renders his work vital to his survival. The imagination of the viewer is free to reveal the whole story.
