The Cathedral of Santa Maria is a Gothic style building from the 13th and 14th centuries, conceived as a church-fortress, with great volume and enclosed appearance, being part of the city`s defenses.   It has a Latin-cross plant, with a wide transept crossing and circular apse containing several chapels.   The western portico is masterwork consisting of three portals: the central one consecrated to the Virgin, the left one dedicated to San Gil and the right one to the Final Judgment and Saint James. In 2007, the famous writer Ken Follett relied on this cathedral to write his book `World Without End`.
