Mythical river Saraswathi plunges through the rocks and disappears. Picture taken at Mana village, near the sacred pilgrim town of Badrinath. The river once believed to have flowed across the northern Indian plains, about 4000 years ago, with the waters draining into the Arabian Sea, subsequently dried up and disappeared. This was probably due to geological upheaval and shifting of the tectonic plates in the Himalayan region. Satellite images still chart the river course beneath the Rajasthan desert, proving that it once really existed.
